Nestled between rugged limestone mountains on the Dong Van Karst Plateau, Sung La Valley is often called “the heart of Ha Giang” — a peaceful land where time seems to move more slowly. Located about 20 kilometers from Dong Van Town, Sung La captivates travelers with its stunning scenery, vibrant cultural life, and poetic charm that has inspired countless photographers and filmmakers.
The valley is home to several ethnic groups, primarily the H’Mong people, along with the Lo Lo and Giay communities. Their traditional stilt houses, surrounded by stone fences and fields of buckwheat flowers, create a beautiful and harmonious picture of highland life. Every morning, villagers in colorful brocade costumes walk to the fields or local markets, carrying baskets of corn, flowers, and smiles that warm even the cold mountain air.
One of the most famous spots in Sung La is “The House of Pao” — the centuries-old H’Mong house that appeared in the award-winning Vietnamese movie The Story of Pao. Built from earth walls and stone, the house perfectly reflects the traditional architecture and lifestyle of the H’Mong people. Today, it has become a small cultural museum where visitors can learn about local traditions and daily life.
Sung La changes its colors with the seasons. In spring, plum and peach blossoms cover the village in white and pink. In autumn, golden corn dries on rooftops under the sunshine. And from October to December, vast fields of buckwheat flowers bloom across the hillsides, painting the valley in soft shades of pink and purple — the most magical time to visit.
Visitors to Sung La can enjoy walking or cycling through the valley, joining local markets, trying traditional foods, or taking photos among buckwheat fields. For a deeper experience, stay overnight in a H’Mong homestay, where you can taste corn wine, join in folk songs, and watch the stars glitter above the stony highlands.
